Liberei

The Liberei in Braunschweig, Germany, is the oldest freestanding library building north of the Alps, constructed between 1412 and 1422. This historic brick Gothic structure, measuring just 5.50 by 5.14 meters, was founded on the legacy of Master Jordanus, who bequeathed his manuscripts to St. Andreas Church in 1309. The library flourished for over 300 years, particularly after a significant donation by Gerwin von Hameln in 1495, but faced decline due to neglect and disputes after his death. Despite its dissolution in 1753, the Liberei remains a vital cultural landmark, showcasing medieval architecture and serving as a testament to the region's literary heritage. It was severely damaged during World War II but restored in 1963 and is now a protected monument, attracting tourists and researchers interested in its rich history.
