Knapp's Castle

Knapp's Castle is a striking ruined mansion located in the Santa Ynez Mountains near Santa Barbara, California. Built in 1916 by George Knapp, founder of Union Carbide, the estate featured five bedrooms, an organ room, and an observatory, all set against a breathtaking backdrop of Lake Cachuma and the Santa Ynez Valley. Although it was once a popular spot for hikers and photographers, the site is currently privately owned and no longer open to the public due to ongoing construction. The remnants of the mansion, including massive sandstone foundations and fireplace pillars, tell the story of its rich history, including a tragic fire that destroyed the original structures shortly after it was purchased by Frances Holden in 1940.
