Administration Building, Decatur Baptist College

The Administration Building of Decatur Baptist College, constructed in 1893 in Decatur, Texas, was a significant historic site that showcased the early educational efforts in the region. Initially serving as the college's main facility, it housed classrooms and a chapel, accommodating 149 students and eight faculty members during its first year. The college, which began in 1891, faced financial difficulties and reorganized as the first private junior college in the U.S. in 1896. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 but tragically was destroyed by fire on March 18, 2023, along with valuable artifacts from the Wise County Heritage Museum it housed. This site reflects the rich educational history of Texas and the evolution of higher education in the United States.
