Murder of John Lennon at The Dakota

John Lennon was fatally shot on December 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman outside The Dakota apartment building. The shooting occurred near the building's entrance at 1 West 72nd Street; Chapman remained at the scene until police arrived. Lennon was transported to Roosevelt Hospital and pronounced dead later that night. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years to life.
