William C. Whitney House

The William C. Whitney House was a notable mansion located at 871 Fifth Avenue and 68th Street on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Originally built for Robert L. Stuart, it was completed under the ownership of William C. Whitney around 1897. The mansion later became the residence of Whitney's son, Harry Payne Whitney, until his death in 1930. Following his wishes, the house was demolished in 1942 after his widow, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, passed away. This site reflects a rich history of New York's elite and the evolution of its architectural landscape.
