Montauk (Clermont, Iowa)

Montauk, a historic house located northeast of Clermont, Iowa, was built in 1874 by William Larrabee, a prominent banker and politician who served as Iowa's governor. The Italianate mansion, designed by architect E. Townsend Mix, features 14 rooms and is surrounded by a working farm that included various outbuildings and gardens. The estate is adorned with artworks and bronze statues of notable military figures. After remaining in the Larrabee family until 1976, Montauk was deeded to the state of Iowa and is now preserved as a state historic site, attracting visitors interested in Iowa's political history and architectural heritage.
