Highland Mall redevelopment (repurposed 1970s shopping mall)

Highland Mall opened in 1971 as one of Austin's first major enclosed shopping malls and operated for decades as a regional retail center. The mall closed in stages during the 2000s and the site was redeveloped into the Austin Community College Highland campus and mixed-use facilities beginning in the 2010s, reusing and adapting the existing mall infrastructure. The project is a documented example of adaptive reuse of late-20th-century commercial infrastructure in Austin.
