San Francisco Ferry Building

Opened in 1898, the Ferry Building served as San Francisco's primary transbay transportation terminal before the construction of the Bay and Golden Gate bridges. Its 245-foot clock tower was inspired by Seville’s La Giralda and the building remained a central piece of waterfront infrastructure through the early 20th century. After decades of changing use, the Ferry Building underwent a major historic restoration and reopened in 2003 as a marketplace while retaining its landmark facade and tower.
