Renwick Gallery (Smithsonian American Art Museum)

The Renwick Gallery at 1661 Pennsylvania Avenue NW is a 19th-century building designed by James Renwick Jr. originally built as a private mansion. Today it operates as a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum focusing on contemporary craft and decorative arts and reopened after a major renovation in 2015. Its ornate façade and location across from the White House make it a distinctive example of historic residential architecture repurposed as a museum.
