Teatro Arthur Azevedo

Teatro Arthur Azevedo, located in the Historic Centre of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, is a neoclassical theatre that dates back to 1817, making it the second oldest theatre in the country. Originally named Teatro da União, it was inspired by Italian theatre designs and could seat 800 spectators at its opening. Over the years, it underwent several name changes and served various purposes, including a cinema from 1940 to 1966. After a period of abandonment, the theatre was rebuilt in 1989, preserving its original architectural plans, and now accommodates 750 spectators across four levels. It is equipped with modern technology for recording and broadcasting performances, making it a cultural hub for both tourists and researchers interested in Brazil's theatrical history.
