San Francisco Municipal Railway - early publicly owned transit

The San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) began municipal streetcar service on December 28, 1912. It is widely cited as the first publicly owned municipal transit system in the United States. Muni introduced city-operated electric streetcar and bus services that replaced private lines and remains the city's public transit agency today.
