Quarters A, Brooklyn Navy Yard

Quarters A, also known as the Commandant's House, is a historic building located in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. Constructed starting in 1805, this prominent example of Federal architecture served as the residence for the commandant of the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard, notably Commodore Matthew C. Perry from 1841 to 1843. Perry is renowned for his pivotal role in opening Japan to the West in 1854, which significantly impacted global trade and international relations. The house features original architectural details from the Federal period and has undergone several expansions over the years. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974, it is now privately owned, offering a glimpse into the rich maritime history of Brooklyn.
