The Astrodome - early enclosed, climate-controlled stadium

Opened in 1965 at 8400 Kirby Drive, the Houston Astrodome was the world's first multi-purpose, domed, air-conditioned stadium and became an architectural and engineering anomaly in sports venues. Its fully enclosed design allowed events to be held independent of Houston's subtropical climate and led to the introduction of synthetic playing surfaces (branded as "AstroTurf"). The structure's scale and indoor environment were unprecedented for a major-league sports facility at the time.
