Eastern State Penitentiary's radial design and separate system

Designed by John Haviland and opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary pioneered the 'separate system' of solitary confinement and introduced a radial, hub-and-spoke cellblock layout that influenced prison architecture worldwide. The fortress-like stone structure and individual cell blocks were intended to promote penitence through isolation and surveillance. The site is now a preserved historic landmark and museum that interprets its architectural and penal-history significance.
