Library Company of Philadelphia - founded by Benjamin Franklin

Founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and fellow members of the Junto, the Library Company of Philadelphia is considered the first successful lending library in America and an early research library for the colonies. Its collections include rare books, manuscripts, broadsides, and prints that document colonial and early U.S. history. The institution continues to function as an independent research library and cultural archive.
