Assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk at San Francisco City Hall

On November 27, 1978 former Supervisor Dan White entered San Francisco City Hall and fatally shot Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk in Moscone's office. White was arrested, tried, and in 1979 convicted of voluntary manslaughter; he served five years of a seven-year sentence. The killings produced widespread political and social reaction in the city, including the 1979 'White Night' riots after White's sentencing.
