Indian Stones

The Indian Stones are historic markers located on Vermont Route 106 in Reading, Vermont, commemorating a Native American raid from 1754. Erected in 1799, they are the oldest commemorative markers in Vermont and among the oldest in the United States. The site features a granite slab with two slate markers detailing the capture of the Johnson family during the French and Indian War, including the birth of a child during their captivity. The markers were relocated and mounted in 1918, and the site offers a glimpse into the region's colonial history, making it an intriguing stop for tourists and researchers alike.
