Washington Monument commemorative stones

The interior walls of the Washington Monument contain nearly 193 commemorative stones and tablets donated by U.S. states, cities, civic organizations, and foreign countries during the 19th century. The stones bear inscriptions, emblems, and dates and were installed as part of the monument’s phased construction and dedication activities. The presence and provenance of these stones are documented in National Park Service records and monument guides.
