Fort Negley - Union Civil War fortification

Fort Negley was constructed beginning in 1862 on a limestone hill south of downtown Nashville by Union soldiers and conscripted African American laborers after Union forces occupied the city. It is often described in historical sources as the largest inland fortification constructed in the United States during the Civil War. During the war it served as a Union strongpoint guarding approaches to Nashville; today the earthworks and remains are preserved as Fort Negley Park with archaeological interpretation.
