September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center

On September 11, 2001, hijacked commercial airliners were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex, causing both towers to collapse and producing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area. The attacks destroyed large portions of the World Trade Center site and resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries in New York City. The events at the World Trade Center led to major changes in U.S. domestic and foreign policy, aviation security, and the redevelopment of the site now marked by memorials and a new tower.
