New York City's Cabaret Law (1926–2017)

Enacted in 1926, the Cabaret Law made it illegal for venues to allow musical entertainment or dancing without a city-issued cabaret license. The law was used to regulate nightclubs, jazz venues, and private clubs and was criticized for uneven enforcement. After decades of controversy and legal challenges, the New York City Council voted to repeal the Cabaret Law in October 2017.
