Carter Plantation

Carter Plantation, located in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, is a historic plantation house with a rich history dating back to 1817. Originally owned by Thomas Freeman, a free person of color, it is notable for being the first property owned by an African American in the area. The plantation spans around 2,000 acres and was a significant timber source, with the Blood River serving as a vital transportation route to New Orleans. The site includes a unique educational history, featuring two schoolhouses-one for the owner's children and another for enslaved children. Today, the plantation house serves as the real estate center for a golf resort, while a large cemetery remains on the property, adding to its historical significance.
