Burning of Washington (War of 1812)

On August 24, 1814, British forces occupied Washington, D.C., and set fire to multiple public buildings, including the Executive Mansion (later called the White House). The burning occurred during the War of 1812 and caused extensive damage to the presidential residence, which was subsequently repaired and reconstructed. The event prompted changes in federal building security and reconstruction efforts in the city.
