Fort Negley - large inland Civil War fort and historic site

Fort Negley, located on a hill south of downtown Nashville, was constructed by Union forces in 1862–1863 and is documented as one of the largest inland forts built during the American Civil War. Much of the fort's masonry earthworks remain; the site includes a restored visitor center and interpretive trails that discuss the fort's construction and the role of African American labor in its building. Fort Negley is maintained as a municipal historic park and hosts archaeological and educational programming.
