George Washington House (Bladensburg, Maryland)

The George Washington House, also known as the Indian Queen Tavern, is a historic site located in Bladensburg, Maryland, built in the 1760s. This Georgian-style brick structure features a gabled roof, dormers, and a full-width porch. It is the last remnant of a social and commercial complex established by Jacob Wirt, whose son became a notable U.S. Attorney General. Although it gained fame as the 'George Washington House' due to the legend that Washington slept there, research indicates it was not a tavern during his lifetime. The building has served various purposes over the years, including housing Jacob Coxey's army during a 1894 march for unemployment relief. Today, it is the headquarters for the Anacostia Watershed Society and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history.
