Temple of Proserpina

The Temple of Proserpina, located in Mtarfa, Malta, was a Roman temple dedicated to the goddess of the underworld and renewal. Although its exact construction date remains unknown, it underwent renovations in the 1st century BC or AD. Discovered in 1613, the temple's ruins have largely been repurposed in local architecture, with only a few fragments, including a fluted marble column and parts of the Chrestion inscription, surviving today. The temple's historical significance is highlighted by its connection to the earliest known Latin text found in Malta. Visitors can explore the remnants of this ancient site, which reflect Malta's rich archaeological heritage and the influence of Roman architecture.
