Polar Bear Jail

The Polar Bear Holding Facility, known as the Polar Bear Jail, is located in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, and serves as a unique sanctuary for polar bears deemed troublesome or dangerous. Established in the early 1980s after a serious incident involving a bear, the facility aims to prevent the need for lethal measures against these majestic animals. With an initial capacity of 20 cells, it can now accommodate up to 28 bears, isolating them for periods ranging from two to 30 days to deter them from approaching the town. Bears are captured, marked, and later released far from human habitation, particularly as winter approaches.
