Alamo Cenotaph (The Spirit of Sacrifice)

The Alamo Cenotaph, sculpted by Pompeo Coppini and commonly called 'The Spirit of Sacrifice,' was completed and erected in 1939 to honor those who died at the 1836 Battle of the Alamo. The monument features carved representations of William B. Travis, James Bowie, and Davy Crockett among other allegorical figures. It stands on Alamo Plaza adjacent to the Alamo mission and has long been a focal point for public commemorations of the battle; its presence has also been part of historic preservation and interpretation discussions concerning the Alamo site.
