Charles River Dam and Locks (at Museum of Science)

The Charles River Dam and Locks sit at the mouth of the Charles River adjacent to the Museum of Science in Boston. The structure includes a navigation lock that allows boats to pass between the Charles River Basin and Boston Harbor. Movable gates on the dam control tidal exchange, reducing tidal flooding and limiting saltwater intrusion into the Basin. The current lock and dam complex replaced an earlier dam built across the river in the early 20th century.
