Sutro Baths ruins and former public saltwater baths

Adolph Sutro built the Sutro Baths complex which opened in 1896 as a large indoor public saltwater swimming facility with multiple pools, glass walls, and a tank for sea life. The baths were later closed and the structure fell into disuse; much of the complex was destroyed by fire in 1966 and the site became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The remaining concrete foundations and walls are visible from the Lands End and Cliff House overlooks and are a documented remnant of late-19th-century recreational architecture in San Francisco.
