San Francisco Cable Car Museum and Washington–Mason Powerhouse

The Cable Car Museum, housed in the Washington–Mason power house and carbarn, displays historic cable cars and the winding machinery that powers the city's cable car lines. San Francisco's cable car system, first demonstrated by Andrew S. Hallidie in 1873, is the world's only surviving manually operated cable car system and is designated a National Historic Landmark. The museum offers public viewing of the giant wooden winding wheels and the cables as they run through the power house.
