Compton's Cafeteria Riot (1966)

Compton's Cafeteria, located in San Francisco's Tenderloin, was the site of the 1966 Compton's Cafeteria Riot, one of the first recorded instances of collective resistance by trans and queer people in the United States. The confrontation followed repeated police harassment and is documented in histories of LGBT activism as a precursor to later movements in the city. The building and event are regularly cited in studies of San Francisco's queer history and community memory.
