Colorado State Capitol - one-mile elevation marker

A brass marker on the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol denotes an elevation of exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level. That marker is the origin of Denver’s nickname, the "Mile High City," and is a common photo stop for visitors. The Capitol building was completed in the 1890s and the marker has been a longstanding city landmark.
