Ghirardelli Square adaptive reuse

Ghirardelli Square occupies the former Ghirardelli chocolate factory site; the Ghirardelli company was founded in San Francisco in 1852. The complex was redeveloped in the 1960s into a public square with shops and restaurants and is often cited as an early successful historic preservation and adaptive reuse project. A Ghirardelli shop and ice cream parlor continue to operate at the square and attract visitors to the northern waterfront.
