35 Stonegate

35 Stonegate is a Grade II* listed building located on one of York's most historic streets. Originally owned by the Prebend of Bramham in the 14th century, the building features a 15th-century timber-framed front and a 17th-century rear addition. It has a rich literary history, having housed a bookshop since 1682, where notable works like Laurence Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' were sold. The building underwent significant renovations in the 19th century, adding a decorative facade and stained glass. It has served various purposes over the years, including a psychic museum and a haunted house attraction, before becoming a retail space in 2015. Visitors can admire its historic architecture, including jettied floors and original 17th-century panelling.
