Dolley Madison's rescue of Washington's portrait during the War of 1812

During the British attack on Washington in August 1814, First Lady Dolley Madison ordered staff to remove a full-length portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart from the White House before British forces entered the city. Contemporary accounts credit her with saving the portrait and other government property when the Madison household was evacuated. The painting became a cherished symbol preserved at the White House after the incident.
