Royal Pier, Southampton

The Royal Pier, originally known as Victoria Pier, is a historic pier in Southampton, England, opened in 1833 by Princess Victoria. Spanning 900 feet, it was designed to facilitate steamer services and became a vital transport hub. Over the years, it underwent several renovations, including a significant rebuild in iron in 1902, and was popular for its pavilion and tramway services. The pier faced challenges during both World Wars and was ultimately closed in 1979. Despite attempts to revitalize the area, including a restaurant in the gatehouse, the pier remains in a derelict state, with ongoing discussions about its future development. The gatehouse is a Grade II listed building, reflecting its historical significance.
