Liberty Bell crack origin stories

The Liberty Bell, displayed at the Liberty Bell Center, bears a prominent crack and is an enduring symbol of American independence. Local lore includes claims that the bell cracked while tolling for George Washington's death or during its first ring for the 1776 reading of the Declaration, but historical research indicates the crack developed over time and was enlarged in the early 19th century. The bell and its inscription are preserved and interpreted at the Independence National Historical Park site.
