Smithsonian Institution Building ('The Castle') - Joseph Henry's electromagnetic work

The Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington served as the workplace of Joseph Henry, the Institution's first Secretary (1846–1878), who conducted influential research on electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction while in Washington. Henry's experiments and published findings contributed to the scientific foundations that later supported telegraphy and related electrical technologies.
