Sutro Baths ruins and the 1966 fire

Adolph Sutro opened the Sutro Baths in 1896 as a large indoor swimming complex; the site was destroyed by a fire on June 26, 1966, leaving extensive concrete ruins at Lands End. The remains at 680 Point Lobos Ave are now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and are a frequent subject of photography and local storytelling. Folklore and ghost-tour narratives have developed around the burned ruins and the site's dramatic history; those accounts are anecdotal.
