Commemorative stones inside the Washington Monument

The interior walls of the Washington Monument contain 193 commemorative stones donated by U.S. states, cities, foreign governments, civic organizations, and individuals during the 19th century. Many of these stones are carved with inscriptions, emblems, or brief dedications and were installed as the monument's construction progressed. The stones remain visible behind the monument's interior marble and are recorded in National Park Service documentation.
