San Diego Electric Railway (original streetcar network removed)

San Diego once had an extensive electric streetcar and interurban system operated by the San Diego Electric Railway Company and successors from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century. The system's streetcar operations were phased out and the final lines were abandoned in 1949, removing streetcar service that had connected neighborhoods to downtown. Downtown rail terminals and nearby streets that once served streetcars, including the area around the Santa Fe Depot, no longer host the original streetcar network.
