Askeby Abbey

Askeby Abbey, a Cistercian nunnery founded in the late 12th century near Linköping, Sweden, served as a significant religious and social hub until its dissolution in 1529. Originally a daughter convent of Vreta Abbey, it was known for its wealth and influence, benefiting from royal patronage and serving as an inn for travelers on the road to Söderköping. The abbey's abbess had the unique privilege of appointing a local priest, which sometimes led to conflicts. Despite its importance, the abbey faced challenges, including lax discipline among the nuns in the late 15th century. Following the Swedish Reformation, the abbey's assets were confiscated, and it was ultimately dissolved, with its buildings destroyed by fire shortly thereafter. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of Askeby Church, which was built alongside the abbey and has undergone several restorations, serving the local parish and commemorating the abbey's historical significance.
