Prospect Hill Plantation

Prospect Hill Plantation, located near Lorman, Mississippi, is a historic site that spans 5,000 acres and offers a glimpse into the complex history of slavery and agriculture in the early 19th century. Originally owned by Isaac Ross, the plantation was a cotton-producing estate that enslaved nearly 300 African Americans. Following Ross's death in 1836, his will led to a legal battle that ultimately freed the enslaved individuals, allowing them to migrate to a colony in Liberia known as Mississippi-in-Africa. The plantation's mansion, built in 1854, still stands today and has been acquired by the Archeological Conservancy for preservation.
