Barton Springs salamander - species endemic to Barton Springs

The Barton Springs salamander (Eurycea sosorum) is an aquatic salamander found only in the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer within Austin and is listed as an endangered species. Its known habitat is restricted to the spring outlets and immediate spring-fed pools at Barton Springs, making it one of the most range-restricted vertebrates in the United States. Conservation efforts and habitat protections in the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer area are focused in part on this species’ survival.
