U.S. Capitol cornerstone laid in 1793

The U.S. Capitol's cornerstone was laid by George Washington on September 18, 1793, during a Masonic ceremony at the southeast corner of the building. Contemporary accounts record that a sealed copper box containing coins, newspapers, and other items was placed beneath the stone as a time capsule. The cornerstone and its placing are recorded elements of the Capitol's documented construction history.
