Howe-Childs Gate House

The Howe-Childs Gate House, located at 5918 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood, is a historic structure built around 1861. Known as 'Willow Cottage' originally, it is recognized as the oldest wood-frame house in Pittsburgh and a significant example from the city's 'Millionaire's Row.' The house features a clapboard Gothic revival/cottage style and has been owned by notable families, including the Howes and Childs, as well as Michael L. Benedum. Currently owned by Chatham University, it was designated a historic landmark in 1986 and added to the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation list in 2004, making it an intriguing site for both tourists and researchers interested in local history and architecture.
