Admiraliteitslijnbaan, Amsterdam

The Admiraliteitslijnbaan is a historic 17th-century building located on the Oostenburgergracht canal in Amsterdam, recognized as a rijksmonument since 1970. Originally serving as the front of the Admiralty's ropewalk, it features a striking trapezoid-shaped facade adorned with decorative elements, including a sculpture of two lions and a coat of arms symbolizing the Admiralty. The building is linked to Czar Peter the Great, who may have stayed here during his shipyard apprenticeship in 1697. After various uses over the centuries, including military storage, it underwent restoration in the late 1940s and housed the Werkspoormuseum until its closure in 2011. Today, the area reflects its rich maritime history with street names that honor its past.
