Naval Battle of Memphis (June 6, 1862)

The Naval Battle of Memphis was fought on the Mississippi River off Memphis on June 6, 1862. Union river gunboats defeated and captured most of the Confederate River Defense Fleet, precipitating the surrender and occupation of the city by Union forces. The Mississippi River Museum at Mud Island interprets this engagement as a pivotal event in Memphis's Civil War river history.
