Abiel Smith School (Museum of African American History site)

The Abiel Smith School, built in 1834 on Joy Street in Boston's Beacon Hill, was the first public school building constructed specifically for African American children in the city. The restored building is owned and operated by the Museum of African American History and is one of the principal sites on Boston's Black Heritage Trail. The school’s location on a narrow Beacon Hill street and its modest exterior make it less conspicuous than larger institutional museums.
